Acest burete se foloseste in principal pentru filtrarea biologica a acvariului, fiind o componenta esentiala a sistemului de filtrare. Structura fina a porilor ofera o foarte mare suprafata filtranta, garantand un flux de apa lin si constant, o caracteristica principala a filtrarii anaerobe. Porii deschisi ai acestui burete sunt realizati fara folosirea chimicalelor, fiind astfel fara reziduri.
